I'm reading abook by Chris Bohjalian called The Double Bind. It's a fictitious story with fictitious characters, but what made me take the book home were the gorgeous back and white photos taken by a real person who inspired the concept behind the book.

The photographs were taken by a (real) once homeless man named Bob "Soupy" Campbell, and were found by a temporary shelter's social worker after his death.

The mystery of how a man could go from photographing famous musicians, comedians, actors and news-makers to being down and out inspired Bohjalian to tell a tale that takes us out of our normal stereotypes and causes us to look more closely at a life behind a life.

Read more about Soupy here, and see more of his photos here.
Just wanted you to know that both those links are dead for some reason.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up, Joy. I think that is probably because I published this article 4 and 1/2 years ago.
